HE Dr Ahmed Bin Mohammed Al Futaisi, Minister of Transport and Communications, visited the first phase of Bidbid-Sur Road Dualling Project to follow up its progress and inspect the various stages.
The Minister of Communication and Transport was accompanied by HE Eng. Salim Bin Mohammed Al Nuaimi, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Transport and Communications for Transport, a number of ministry officials, engineers of the executing committee, and representatives of the local media.
Al Futaisi was briefed on the work carried out in the first two parts of the first phase which covers 115km.
It starts from the intersection of Bidbid with the duality of Al Rusayl Nizwa Road, through the Wilayat of Sumail in the Governorate of Al Dakhiliyah and the Wilayats of Al Mudhaibi, Dima Wa al Taeen, till Masron intersection near Ibra Referral Hospital in the Governorate of North Al Sharqiyah.
Al Futaisi said, “Parts of the first phase of the project and for the second part of this phase, particularly beyond Wadi Al Ouq towards Ibra in the Governorate of North Al Sharqiyah were opened. A small part, about 5km is left in Al Haima area, and is expected to open in March. Thus we have completed the second part of the first phase of the project which is about 70km long.”
The first part going through Wadi Al Ouq is an area with a difficult geographical terrain. This has led to the delay in the opening of the project on time which was set to finish by the end of 2016.
Al Futaisi said big landslides occurred in the middle of Wadi Al Ouq, after completion of the major part of the work.
The ministry has asked the assistance of experts and professors from Sultan Qaboos University to find out the reasons behind those landslides and study the whole project in terms of traffic safety, he added.
