Rowhani arrives today

MUSCAT

Dr Hassan Rowhani, President of Iran is due to pay a one-day business visit to the Sultanate on Wednesday during which he is expected to meet His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said, according to a statement issued by the Diwan of Royal Court.

The visit comes in a bid to enhance the existing bilateral cooperation and friendly ties binding the countries, according to a statement.

The visit stems from the keenness of the two countries to promote bilateral cooperation to achieve aspirations of the Omani and Iranian peoples and bring welfare to both in many fields, according to a statement from the Diwan of Royal Court.

During his visit, the Iranian president will be accompanied by an official delegation comprising Dr Mohammed Javad Zarif, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohammad Nahavandian, Chief of Staff of the President of Iran, Eng.  Mohammadreza Nematzadeh, Minister of Industries and Business, Dr Valiollah Seif, Governor of Central Bank of Iran, Hesamodin Ashna, cultural adviser for the President of the Republic and Head of the Strategic Studies Centre,  Hamid Aboutalebi, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Office for Political Affairs, Hossein Jaberi Ansari, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Arab and African Affairs, Bahman Hussein Pour, Director of the Protocols Department at the Presidential Office, Perviz Ismaili, Vice- Chairman of the Office of the President of the Republic for Relations and Media, Muhammad Tutunji, Charge De Affairs of the Embassy of the Iran in Muscat, and Gholamhossein Shafei, President of the Iranian Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Mines.

Rowhani’s  Gulf tour comes after Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al Sabah visited Teheran last month to deliver a message from the emir on Gulf-Iranian relations.

“Gulf states have a true desire that relations with Iran are normal and based on international law,” Sheikh Sabah said at the time, calling for a “normalisation of ties and opening dialogue”.

Oman has always had good ties with Iran. The Sultanate played a key role in the negotiations that led to the July 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers, hosting secret talks between Iranian and US representatives.

Rowhani visited Muscat in March 2014. His Majesty the Sultan visited Teheran in August 2013.
