For Muntaha Naser Al Awfi, a Grade XII student, the summer camp organised by the Modern College of Business and Science (MCBS) was unique as it helped improve her confidence in speaking in English. Studying in a local school in Muscat and dreaming of going for higher studies next year, the young girl proudly beams with confidence to say the classes were quite fun.

“I learnt grammar and enhanced my vocabulary. Now I feel more confident in speaking English. The camp really helped me to shed inhibitions and start conversations in English.”

Her words echoed the feelings of other participants. It was a seven-week long camp that started on July 2 with the participation of 150 pupils from Grade VII to Grade XII.

The five day-a-week camp saw pupils divided into five groups based on age and level of English language proficiency after a placement assessment.

The four-hour session was designed to help participants learn the nuances of the language through various class activities. The sessions conducted by the faculty of MCBS was created to help the participants gain skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking English.

The intensive interactive sessions enabled the pupils to gain skills in interactive English, which is absent in their normal school course.

The students were imparted language lessons through discussions, debates, role plays and other activities such as poster and banner designing. These were used as key elements in imparting English language skills.
