Private sector support ‘key to social responsibility projects’

The first Oman Partnership and Social Responsibility Forum opened under the patronage of Minister of Social Development HE Sheikh Mohammed Bin Suad Al Kalbani under the theme ‘Towards a National Charter for Social Responsibility’ on Wednesday.

Al Kalbani said the civil society in the Sultanate is still in the early stages and thus needs all cooperation and support from the private sector to provide quality services. He praised the interaction among the different organisations, such as the Omani Woman Organisations and NGOs.

CEO of the Capital Market Authority (CMA) Sheikh Abdullah Bin Salem Al Salmi said this forum aims at revising the efforts made to raise awareness of the corporate social responsibility and forecast the future plans to reach the prospective goals that are consistent with the best world practices in the field of sustainable economic and social development.

Sheikha Hissah Bint Khalifa Al Thani, Envoy of the Arab League Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Guest of Honour at the Forum, said that social responsibility emanates from the human instinct which includes sympathy with others and love for help.

She added that social responsibility as a title is just a means for guiding the human energy towards good deeds and helping others.

The first session began with the title ‘Sustainable Development and Social Integration’, which reviewed the difference between corporate social responsibility and the culture of volunteerism, the principles of responsibility, the mechanisms of implementation, and the management strategy to maximise their utilisation.

The second session discusses the theme ‘Future of Social Responsibility’, in which the participants seek by their working papers and a seminar to extrapolate the prospects of corporate social responsibility and institutions operating in the Sultanate.

The third session will review the best practices in social responsibility in the Sultanate, and the models that can be built on them, by highlighting the experiences of companies and individuals supporting social responsibility, as well as a presentation by one of the beneficiaries of social responsibility.

The Forum will be accompanied by an exhibition to highlight the contribution of private sector institutions to social responsibility projects, in order to enhance the mission of the forum and to achieve its goals.

It will also present the efforts of partners and supporters who play a leading role in social responsibility and to identify as many distinguished institutions as possible.

For the first time, the initiative of the forum will be announced at its first session and the main partners of the forum. The initiative is a cash award for the best project or idea in the field of social responsibility to encourage and support social responsibility efforts in the country.
